sunday. >> . >> 16 afghan civilians are dead. witnesses describing a nighttime massacre blamed on a u.s. soldier. could this put our troops in even more danger? in moments, a pentagon spokesman joins us live. i'm harris falkner, this is the fox report. >> an american in uniform accused of going door-to-door, killing families in their homes in afghanistan. now, reactions coming in from topple military brass to the white house and in that war zone suspicious is reaching an all-time high and the hunt is on for votes and delegates in the south. after a race for the republican nomination, tonight, game on as a new round of political contests gets tighter and tougher. >> plus, star chase and it's dark out.

and they always try to get away, hey, dude, you know how this is going to end. whoa, we'll let the rest of the tape roll. >> we begin tonight with a deeping this crisis in afghanistan. officials there saying, united states soldiers shot and killed 16 civilians, several of them women and children. afghan president karzai called it an intentional killing and assassination of innocent people and the white house and pentagon condemning the attack and leaders from both governments looking for answers. the attack happened in two villages near a u.s. base in southern kandahar province, an american man in uniform walked into three different homes and opened fire before apparently returning to the base and turning himself in. >> according to a statement from the afghan president, one teenager claims the soldier woke up his entire family and began shooting. n.a.t.o. officials saying they now have the suspect in custody. and at this point, it's still unclear what sparked the attack, but foreign policy

experts say one thing is certain, this could not have happened at a worse time. you may recall last month afghan workers say they found burned muslim holy books at another n.a.t.o. base. and word trig aring attacks that killed six n.a.t.o. service members, four of them americans, and president obama and members of the military apologized calling the incident unintentional. as recently as friday, tensions over that book burning seemed to have cooled off just a bit, as the obama having says it was considering transferring five leaders. to qatar. the thought that it might possibly be an incentive for the taliban to enter peace talks and washington has not yet agreed to that plan and some in congress oppose it it. a short time ago, the white house, where we're seeing this photograph, of mr. obama calling afghan president karzai and president obama

saying i offer my condolences for the families after loved ones for those who lost their lives and to the people of afghanistan who have endured too much violence and suffering and this incident is tragic and shocking and does not represent the care of our military and the respect the united states has for the people of afghanistan. joining us now pentagon spokesman captain john kirby. good to have you tonight. >> thanks for having me on, i appreciate it. >> some reports now have some details coming out about the man arrested. they say he's from fort lewis, washington. what can you share about the man in custody. >> unfortunately i'm not going to be able to get into too much detail of myself. and he's investigated right now in a secure location, he's an american soldier and that he was acting alone. >> all right, i do know at least from some reports that this man has family here in the united states, married with two children. what is happened?

you says' interrogated right now. a few hours ago, there was a warning about all americans in afghanistan and wondering what is being done left to protect those left behind. and putting together troops and contractors and civilians. >> we have quite a presence in afghanistan right now and we always try to be vigilent and mindful of production, on a daily basis there in afghanistan and the military has not been put on any special alert today or this evening, as a result of this. regional commanders have asked that their discretion of the ability to do what they need to do to protect themselves. they haven't taken any extra measures as a result of this. general allen made it clear to his commanders this morning in the wake of this very tragic incident that he wants them to continue engaging with the population, with the afghan national security forces. the mission it wasn't changed and our focus of being out and about in the population hasn't changed. >> i'm glad you brought that

up. part of the mission, we hear that. win the hearts and minds of the people in afghanistan. how much does the latest tragedy compromise our ability to achieve. it to prevent afghanistan from being a safe haven from terrorists again and we believe we've made great progress. it's been a success story for us in terms. strategy. so, i think, i think we're moving ahead in a very positive way and it's important as tragic as this incident it, and it is tragic, it would be more tragic for us to let this derail us from the largest strategy from the mission in afghanistan. >> what's our relationship with afghanistan now. the leaders and the people? >> actually, it's been quite good. i mean, from very low he level with the afghan national security forces and provincial

court to president karzai. in spite of recent violence we've seen in the last six, seven weeks, i mean, evidence in fact by the memorandum of understanding signed just this weekend between the karzai administration and isap. over the full afghan control in six months. >> i want to get back to the suspect who is in custody after the tragedy in afghanistan. and what happens next after the interrogation? >> well, they're interviewing him, as we speak, and they're going to-- they've been on the site for most of the day collecting evidence and we need to let this investigation proceed and general allen, and promised president karzai in his call that it would be a thorough, but a rapid investigation and they're working hard and i don't think we want to get in the process to second guess where it ends up. and let the facts and evidence

take us wherever they need to take us and figure out exactly what happened. what the motivation was here and hold the individual responsible, accountability through u.s. law. >> captain, i've been reading today that some of the civilians and citizens there say they don't believe that just one person is involved in this and there may have been one soldier. what can you tell bus that? >> i can tell you that we're confident that there was just one individual acting alone and one of the reasons that we know that is because, when it was noted that the individual left the outpost and it was noted and reported up the chain of command and they did the right thing, and took accounting of everything they had at the out post and where everything was. and that's how we know that there's only one individual involved. >> before i let you go, bottom line, many americans watching and wondering whether the shooting speeds up the ximent time line from afghanistan. and you didn't think that the strategy would change, but

what about the time line for pulling out? >> there's been no change to any of the time lines that we're on right now. the-- the no talk accelerating or the other the components of the strategy. the mission continues. the recovery of our search by the end of the summer and frankly, the kind of work that he expects, that the nation expects us to do on the ground with our afghan partners every day. >> what about keeping us apprise of what's happening with the ensuing investigation in afghanistan. when you give up the updates, how much do you think we'll learn about that? >> again, we want them to do their job and do that without extra pressures externally, to the degree that we can keep people in and informed we certainly will. >> all right. captain john kirby, joining us tonight. a pentagon spokesperson, thank you for joining us.

>> the coast guard coming to the rescue of a sick passenger aboard a cruiseship 100 miles off the coast of virginia. a helicopter crew, medivacs a woman and her husband from the norwegian jewel. the capital contacted the coast guard saying the woman had abdominal pain and needed medical attention. in a hurricaercules airplane ane woman's condition not clear. the price of gas jumping up again and overnight the national average up another 2 cents to 3.79, four states now well over $4 a gallon and keep in mind, it's not even the summer driving season yet.

22-year-old kevin, and 30-year-old tony jackson escaped from the lafayette correctional facility after overpowering a pair of deputies and one was even dressed in a sheriff's uniform when he busted out. how did he do that. they didn't make it far, caught hours later. >> and just several miles from downtown lafayette, and still, unknown at this point what their mode of transportation was, did they walk in? we don't know. we look at what failed. and certainly, that's not something that we're going to answer this morning, we don't have all the answers, but certainly it will be looked into and we'll see what modifications need to be made. >> listen to how he got the uniform. two were in jail. one held for murder and the other for carjacking and aggravated escape. takes a long time to rebuild from the devastating tsunami

news. and reacting to it a deadly attack civilians in afghanistan. the u.s. military officials saying they have an american soldier in custody an army staff sergeant from the state of washington. before turning himself into authorities at the base and i spoke with pentagon spokesperson at the fox reporter a few minutes ago. >> we were confident that this was one individual acting alone and i can tell you one of the reasons we know that. when it was noticed they left the outpost and noticed and reported up the chain of command. command did the right thing and took a tally of everybody at the house post and knew where everybody was and only one person and that's how we know there was only one individual involved. >> president obama reaching out today to the counterpart in afghanistan to express condolences and saying that the u.s. will work quickly to hold fully accountable,

anybody. >> and connell powell has more from afghanistan. >> there were nine children and three women, and several others were injured as well during the the shooting and according to the u.s. officials, sometime around 3 a.m., a u.s. soldier walked off his base in kandahar and went about 500 or so meters into a local village and entered afghan homes and as many as three afghan homes and shooting civilians there in all of the houses and then returned to his base, just a few shorts feet away from where he shot afghan civilians and then arrested by u.s. and afghan officials and he is now in u.s. custody. it's not clear what prompted this attack us officials say they're still investigating, but they say this was the only individual involved in in shooting. now, this incident comes as negotiations for a long-term

partnership are in the works for the united states and afghanistan and with all the anti-american sentiment, and now this, it seems unlikely that any agreement between the united states and afghan government will be reached soon. there is such distrust and anger between the two sides and because of incidents like this, that's just been growing and growing and growing, and it has really spoiled the afghan relationship with the united states, and u.s. officials are working very hard to try to repair that relationship, but as long as incidents like this continue to happen, that relationship will continue to be strained, harris. >> all right. connor powell, thank you very much. the shooting tragedy follows weeks of deadly violence in afghanistan, comes in the wake of the burning of the muslim holy books and the n.a.t.o. base. protesters killed 30 people among them. president obama apologizing to afghan's president and calling it mistake, saying they were

suspects, teenagers, one 16, facing ago nated robbery charges and police say they grabbed the cash box from the girl scouts selling cookies outside a wal-mart near houston and the girls didn't give up that money without a fight and one held off the side of a getaway car for a short time as they sped off. we're told she's just fine now. police use some fancy driving to end a high speed chase. it's first stop on fox trip across america. >> and california, a bad guy busted after a choice through the streets of los angeles. it stopped when the officer tried stopping a carjack suspect and the suspect was crashing into a light pole. he crawled out of the wreck. and swear, a two-year-old injured when mini-van smashes through the wall of mcdonald's.
